Installations, deployments, repairs, and updates took up most of their time. &#8220;We managed very diverse services, each with its own specificities. Our <strong>goal<\/strong> was clear: to harmonize the entire environment and <strong>simplify daily work<\/strong>,&#8221; explains Nicolas Bodart, IT manager at Florennes City Council.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Challenges: limited resources and need for flexibility<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>IT professionals began exploring <strong>workplace virtualization solutions<\/strong> based on <strong>open source<\/strong> technologies. They aspired to take a qualitative leap in their digital infrastructure, investing in an <strong>innovative, secure, and flexible solution<\/strong> without the need for large investments.<\/p>\n<p>The first project involved modernizing the municipal library&#8217;s Digital Public Space (DPS). They needed a <strong>robust digital workplace solution<\/strong> that would allow for <strong>centralized and adaptable management<\/strong> and also offer good <strong>performance<\/strong> even with older IT equipment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why UDS Government? Freedom, compatibility, and technical excellence<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>They discovered <a href=\"https:\/\/udsenterprise.com\/en\/solutions-vdi-sectors\/vdi-government-sector\/\"><strong>UDS Government<\/strong><\/a>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/virtualcable.net\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Virtual Cable<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s digital workplace solution based on <a href=\"https:\/\/udsenterprise.com\/en\/\"><strong>UDS Enterprise<\/strong><\/a> and specifically developed for the public sector. It allowed us to test at our own pace and discover<strong> features that went far beyond what we expected<\/strong>,&#8221; Bodart notes.<\/p>\n<p>Among the key strengths they highlight are <strong>compatibility with multiple virtualization platforms<\/strong>, a variety of <strong>connection protocols, support for Linux and Windows virtual desktops<\/strong>, simplified management, high levels of <strong>security<\/strong>, and multi-factor authentication.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ability to work with <strong>Linux VDI <\/strong>desktops and <strong>reuse existing equipment<\/strong> was key. We later deployed the solution to Windows terminals as well. Our administrative agents primarily use office applications via <strong>thin clients<\/strong>, with sessions hosted on a <strong>Terminal Server<\/strong> (TS). UDS Government has greatly facilitated the management of these TS,\u201d he states.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Benefits: Time savings, operational continuity, and enhanced security<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Today, Florennes City Council relies on UDS Government for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Digital Public Space (DPS)<\/strong>: Library users use <strong>non-persistent Ubuntu desktops<\/strong> with FreeRDP for searching. The system boots directly to the login screen, facilitating access. The database for these users is completely separate from that of municipal officials, ensuring <strong>security<\/strong> and <strong>confidentiality<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Administrative agents:<\/strong> Connected to their Active Directory, they have <strong>persistent virtual desktops with Windows<\/strong> 10, accessible from <strong>repurposed legacy computers<\/strong> thanks to the Virtual Cable solution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Remote work for elected officials:<\/strong> Political leaders, who are often away from the office, can <strong>securely access<\/strong> their tools and documents at <strong>any time from their personal devices<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to the IT manager, the <strong>time and complexity of resolving incidents has been significantly reduced<\/strong>. Previously, each case could require several manual interventions. Now, in 80% of cases, deploying a new virtual machine takes just a few minutes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Specific benefits:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Centralized management and deployment<\/strong> of workspaces<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reduction<\/strong> of IT department <strong>burden<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Standardization<\/strong> of work environments<\/li>\n<li>Strengthened system <strong>security<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Rapid issue resolution<\/strong>, without wait times<\/li>\n<li><strong>Extended<\/strong> device <strong>lifecycle<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Investment in<strong> refurbished<\/strong>, cost-effective, and energy-efficient <strong>equipment<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Use of <strong>free<\/strong> and <strong>open-source<\/strong> software<\/li>\n<li>Greater mobility and facilities for<strong> secure remote work<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Conclusion and outlook: consolidation and expansion to other public services<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The council plans to <strong>double the number of users<\/strong> before the end of 2025 and extend the deployment to other services such as<strong> educational centers<\/strong> and the <strong>Public Center for Social Action<\/strong> (CPAS).<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the flexibility of Virtual Cable&#8217;s solution, they are also considering <strong>migrating their VMware vSphere infrastructure to Proxmox<\/strong>, which will allow them to <strong>reduce licensing costs<\/strong> and avoid the risk of vendor lock-in.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our experience could serve as <strong>inspiration for other municipal agencies<\/strong>.
