EVITA 3.0: Innovation in digital accessibility
Biometric authentication driven by artificial intelligence is the core of the innovation in the new version of EVITA 3.0. Developed by the ICT area of the University of Murcia to promote technological accessibility, this Inclusive Virtual Desktop with Applied Technologies is based on UDS Enterprise, Virtual Cable‘s digital workplace solution. The new facial recognition system not only guarantees simpler and safer access, but is also an inclusive solution for users with difficulties with traditional authentication methods, such as people with visual or motor disabilities. This approach, which allows for accurate verification of identities, reaffirms the commitment of the University of Murcia and Virtual Cable to equal opportunities.
It is important to note that the advantages of this virtual desktop designed for people with disabilities or special learning needs and AI biometric authentication are not limited to the university environment. Their exportable design makes them adaptable tools for any organization seeking to facilitate more inclusive access to their digital workspaces, available 24×7, from any location and device.
EVITA 3.0’s biometric authentication process combines precision and security. After registering users’ facial patterns, the system uses facial recognition with proof of liveness to validate the identity in real time. Once verified, UDS Enterprise assigns a virtual desktop accessible from a web browser, allowing quick and hassle-free access. This flow not only facilitates students’ access to the necessary academic tools, but also removes barriers in the daily work of administrative and service staff.
In addition to biometrics, EVITA 3.0 includes advanced tools such as Jaws, a screen reader for people with low vision, and ZoomText, which combines magnifying glass functions and a screen narrator. It also integrates an on-screen keyboard, a DRM document reader with Adobe Digital Editions, and an optical character recognition system to convert text from images into editable text, facilitating access to printed materials.
The impact of EVITA on inclusive education
Since its launch in 2019, EVITA has established itself as a pioneering platform in inclusive learning, offering customizable settings such as color filters, mouse settings, and narrator. User preferences are automatically saved and allow consistent access from any device. All of this guarantees an inclusive work and learning environment, adapted to different needs.
Finalist in the Education category of the 16th Comunicaciones Hoy Awards, EVITA 3.0 facilitates access to digital resources and places the University of Murcia as a benchmark in accessibility and digitalization in the academic field.
With this innovative project, the University of Murcia and Virtual Cable demonstrate that technology is a key driver to guarantee equitable and accessible education. Its ability to be implemented in other sectors reinforces EVITA as an exportable model, prepared to overcome digital barriers in multiple environments.
