Since the official launch of UDS Enterprise 4.0, the Virtual Cable development team has been working on an extensive technological renewal of the solution. This process reaches one of its main milestones with UDS Enterprise 5.0, whose architecture includes critical components rewritten in Rust.
The choice of this language is not a response to a passing trend. Rust enables the development of systems software with memory security guarantees built into the language itself. This helps prevent certain classes of errors that can cause vulnerabilities, failures, or unexpected behavior.
A decision that anticipated the evolution of the industry
Virtual Cable began this process when Rust did not yet hold the position it has today in the strategies of major technology vendors.
In its November 2025 security report, Microsoft stated that approximately 50% of the vulnerabilities it fixes and assigns CVEs to are related to memory issues. The document also describes the rewriting of Surface drivers in Rust to prevent failures such as buffer overflows or access to memory that has already been freed. Microsoft Secure Future Initiative report, November 2025.
This direction continues to gain momentum. On October 26, 2026, Microsoft explained that it is already working to modernize large legacy C and C++ codebases by moving them to Rust, including codebases related to Windows and Azure. The process combines automation, testing, and formal verification to preserve software behavior and security throughout the transformation. Microsoft describes its modernization strategy here.
This evolution confirms a direction that Virtual Cable had already incorporated into its roadmap: building critical components on a more secure, lightweight technological foundation that is ready to continue evolving.
Which components have been renewed in UDS Enterprise 5.0?
One of the most visible changes is UDS Launcher, the new UDS Enterprise access client. It has been completely rewritten in Rust, and its installer is approximately 30 MB, compared with more than 100 MB for the previous client. It also removes the Qt and Python dependencies, runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS, and no longer requires XQuartz on Apple computers.
UDS Actor has also been rewritten in Rust. On Linux, it no longer depends on Python and is now distributed as a native binary. This renewal makes the component easier to evolve and adds new diagnostic and maintenance capabilities for managed desktops.
UDS Tunnel, which is responsible for channeling remote connections, has been redeveloped in Rust and runs in a Docker container within the appliance. This architecture provides a modern foundation for the new connectivity and protection capabilities included in version 5.0.
Browser-based access has also been renewed. The new RDP HTML5 gateway, developed in Rust and TypeScript, replaces the previous Apache Guacamole-based component. This evolution gives Virtual Cable direct control over gateway development and enables it to expand its capabilities in line with the needs of UDS Enterprise users and administrators.
Security from the architecture itself
Platform security does not depend solely on visible features or on controls added at the end of development. It also begins with the decisions made when designing and building its components.
By design, Rust helps prevent memory management errors that are common in other languages. This does not mean that it eliminates every possible vulnerability, but it can reduce exposure to certain classes of failures and provide a more robust foundation for particularly sensitive components.
The technological renewal of UDS Enterprise 5.0 follows this principle: building security into the architecture and preparing the platform for new requirements involving digital workplace access, communications, and protection.
Smarter for administrators and simpler for users
The migration to Rust is a major transformation, but its results also extend to the day-to-day experience: a lighter client, fewer dependencies, new access options, and components that are ready to evolve more quickly.
This is only the first preview of UDS Enterprise 5.0. Over the coming weeks, Virtual Cable will reveal new capabilities related to user experience, identity, operational visibility, and platform integration.
UDS Enterprise 5.0 is getting closer.
Frequently asked questions about UDS Enterprise 5.0 and Rust
Which UDS Enterprise 5.0 components are written in Rust?
UDS Launcher, UDS Actor, and UDS Tunnel have been rewritten in Rust. The new RDP and SSH HTML5 gateways were developed in Rust; the RDP gateway also includes a web interface built in TypeScript and replaces the previous gateway based on Apache Guacamole, Java, and Tomcat.
How does Rust contribute to the security of UDS Enterprise 5.0?
Rust includes memory safety guarantees in the language itself. This helps prevent certain classes of errors that can cause vulnerabilities, failures, or unexpected behavior, and provides a more robust foundation for particularly sensitive components.
What improvements does UDS Launcher include?
UDS Launcher has been completely rewritten in Rust, starts in under one second, and has an installer that is approximately 30 MB, compared with more than 100 MB for the previous client. It also removes the Qt and Python dependencies and no longer requires XQuartz on Apple computers.
Does using Rust eliminate every possible vulnerability?
No. Rust does not eliminate every possible vulnerability, but it helps prevent common memory management errors by design and reduces exposure to certain classes of failures.
