Educational environments must take advantage of advances in technology and, at the same time, adapt to the new habits of students, teachers and administrative staff.
The proliferation of the use of mobile devices and the advantages in terms of management, costs saving, availability, flexibility, and accessibility make desktop virtualization an interesting option to take into account for universities, since it also makes more easy the management and deployment of workstations.
From a technological point of view, the BYOD trend (Bring Your Own Device) increasingly associated to the A3 concept: anytime-anywhere-anydevice (access your job from anywhere, at anytime and from any device) makes virtual desktop technology (VDI) to be studied as a possible alternative to the current corporate physical equipment in the University environment.
During the last two weeks, the most outstanding topics in our blog have been the following: VMware vSphere new version, the new functionalities of UDS Enterprise with OpenGnsys and tips to avoid errors when deploying a virtual desktop infraestructure.
Below you can find the links to these posts so that you can be up to date with the most interesting news about virtualization:
Hyper-converged storage systems are emerging as an ideal option for a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), since they allow providers to manage all configuration options. The system can be preconfigured with the type of storage and adequate networks, so virtual desktops work properly. In addition, having a single contact for support also facilitates the work of the administrator.
In this type of storage, all parts of the system are designed to work together and they are optimized for a specific type of virtualization (server virtualization or VDI). This makes it fairly simple to start with a small pilot and then update it and expand it to support the entire organization.
This new actor is based on a common framework for all supported platforms (Windows & Linux virtual machines and physical machines). It consists of two components, one in service and another in user space, which makes possible to interact with the user. It supports the following operating systems: Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 2008, Windows 2012, Ubuntu 12, 13 and 14; Fedora (from core up to 20), OpenSuse 13.1 and Centos 7.
One solution is the use of mobile profiles. These profiles are defined through the Active Directory group policy, storing the user data in a shared resource. The mobile profile will allow the user data to become available from any Windows device: a physical desktop, virtual desktop or a Terminal Services user session. This data is loaded at the start of a session and the changes made to the profile during the session are saved upon closing it. In the case of non-persistent desktops, the use of mobile profiles is clear, since the user is assigned a new desktop in the infrastructure with each session start-up, loading the mobile profile stored in a network resource during the start-up process.
