VSCodium: alternative to Visual Studio Code with no trackers

Microsoft Virtual Studio Code editor is widely used by developers around the world. It is an Open Source software that is available for download under MIT license. The problem is that official binary compilations are not exactly the same as the public source code. They include a telemetry system enabled by default with a series of components that track the actions performed within the editor.

The VSCodium project was created with the aim of providing an alternative free from these tracking systems that send information about user activity to Microsoft. It is a fork of the popular code editor that provides binaries ready for use and with no trace of Microsoft telemetry.

VSCodium builds are for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and support Git, JavaScript, TypeScript, and Node.js.

At first glance, there does not seem to be a difference between the two software. The appearance is identical, it works the same and it incorporates all the functionalities of the original project. It is compatible with its extensions, it is also published under the MIT license and it is being updated following the Microsoft releases.

One of its few drawbacks is that although it has Deb and RMP installers, it is necessary to manually configure the repositories for these formats.

You can dig deeper into this project by visiting its website and its GitHub repository.
