74% of companies will shift to remote work after the health crisis

by | Apr 7, 2020

After the Covid-19 health alert, almost three out of four organizations will continue to use remote working permanently. 74% of the companies consulted by Gartner in its CFO Survey assure that at least 5% of its employees will keep on working remotely.

“CFOs, already under pressure to tightly manage costs, clearly sense an opportunity to realize the cost benefits of a remote workforce. In fact, nearly a quarter of respondents said they will move at least 20% of their on-site employees to permanent remote positions,” said Alexander Bant, practice vice president, research for the Gartner Finance Practice.

“Most CFOs recognize that technology and society have evolved to make remote work more viable for a wider variety of positions than ever before,” said Mr. Bant. “Within the finance function itself, 90% of CFOs previously reported to us that they expect minimal disruptions to their accounting close process, with almost all activities able to be executed off-site.”

To minimize the impact of the health crisis on the labor market, financial managers are looking for alternatives to keep as many employees as possible and avoid severe cuts. Remote work is a great ally for this objective, since it implies significant cost savings and allows workers to continue carrying out their professional work, so that the productivity of the company is not affected. According to another Gartner survey, 20% of organizations have deferred on-premise technology spend, and an additional 12% plan to do so. 13% of respondents have already taken this measure and 9% will do it in the next 9 months.

In short, everything points to telecommuting is here to stay. Most organizations will adopt it definitively for part of their staff. The current crisis triggered by the Coronavirus has highlighted the pressing need to have an infrastructure that allows remote work to be implemented the shortest possible time, to guarantee business continuity in alarm situations, whether sanitary or meteorological, or of any other nature.
