Proton is the first VPN provider that open sources its vApp

by | Jan 22, 2020

For the first time, a VPN provider has open sourced the source code of all its Windows, macOS, Android and iOS applications. Proton is the company that has marked this important milestone in the history of Open Source. In addition, in a clear commitment to transparency and for the safety of its users, this company has announced that it is undergoing independent security audits.

ProtonVPN was created in 2017 by a group of scientists from the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), used to working with the community and convinced that joining forces to improve and review software development is truly beneficial for everyone. Therefore, they already had in mind to release the code of all their applications and now they have made it happen.

Thanks to this action, the global security community can now check the software to look for potential vulnerabilities, which can be quickly corrected. In addition, anyone has access to the encryption mechanisms used by ProtonVPN and how user data is managed, ensuring compliance with their privacy policy. All this is of vital importance in a VPN application, since it has privileged access to the user’s device data and all his online activity.

Regarding the decision to submit their technology to third-party review, in their blog they explain that they have done so to provide a higher level of transparency and responsibility to what is offered today in the market. From the beginning they established a no registration policy and are subject to the regulation of Switzerland, where some of the strictest privacy laws in the world govern. Now they have taken another step: Mozilla analyzes its technology and makes public all the results of the security audits.
