Linux security expert Phil Oester discovered a privilege-escalation critical vulnerability affecting the Linux Kernel. This bug is called Dirty COW and identified as CVE-2016-5195 and although it has recently been discovered, it existed since 2007.
This flaw affects the component Kernel Memory Subsystem, allows to manipulate an unknown input and explote the vulnerability that may affect the system’s confidenciality, integrity and availability.
Developers usually face the dilemma of choosing the Linux distribution that best fits the programming language they use, easy to setup and runs best Linux and that runs best in a virtual environment or on old hardware. In order to help to come to a decision, Linux developers from Toptal website have drawn up a list with the most recommended distros:
–Ubuntu: It is the easiest, supports most hardware and it is very friendly to people not used to work with Linux. The only snag is that it is quite heavy due to all the stuff that comes with and its Unity GUI is causing a lot of controversies between Linux users.
Linus Torvalds announced the availability of a new Linux version, that includes interesting news for current technologies. It adds, for example, a new driver for ARM Mali graphics for mobile devices, support for Raspberry Pi 3 SoC and for Microsoft‘s Surface 3 touch technology.
Linux 4.8 supports AMDGPU OverDrive, so AMD free drivers for GNU/Linux now support overclocking, although only graphics supported by AMDGPU are initially supported.
Next week Berlín will host two of the most important Linux events in Europe: LinuxCon and ContainerCon.
