CentOS Stream: new edition for developers

by | Sep 26, 2019

Red Hat has released this week the new version of CentOS and a new edition of this operating system for developers called CentOS Stream.

The latter is an advanced Rolling Release aimed at those who work with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). It will receive daily updates and will serve as a preview or open beta of the next release of RHEL. In this way, developers will be able to carry out tests and will be aware of the new features and functionalities that will be incorporated. On the other hand, from Red Hat they will be able to get a valuable feedback from the community that will guide them to design the roadmap of the product.

For production environments, the new version available is CentOS 8.0. As it is the free version of RHEL, it comes with most of the new features incorporated in the latest release of this operating system. The first thing to keep in mind is that the default package manager has migrated from YUM to DNF.

The default desktop is now GNOME and comes with an on-screen keyboard, support for new devices (such as Thunderbolt 3) and, among other things, Wayland by default as display server, which provides multi-monitor support, better handling and management of windows and greater security.

Another feature aimed at improving security is Session Recording, which allows administrators to record all the activity performed by users that connect to the server via SSH.

In addition, in CentOS 8 many of the components of this distribution have been updated, such as Python 3.6; MariaDB 10.3, MySQL 8.0, PostgreSQL 9.6 and 10; Redis 4.0; HTTPD 2.4 and NGINX 1.14; Git 2.17; PHP 7.1 and 7.2; Ruby 2.5; .NET Core 2.1; Java 8 and 11; Pacemaker Cluster Resource Manager 2.0.0; Kernel 4.18.0-80; OpenLDAP has been replaced by 369 LDAP Server… and many other updates have been added which can be found in the release notes of this new version.

CentOS Linux 8 and CentOS Stream are available for download at CentOS website.
