by | Jan 15, 2021

As every year at this time, the MuyLinux publication has revealed the results of its annual survey about the Linux distributions, desktop environments and browsers preferred by its user community. Ubuntu has once again been crowned the most popular distro, followed by far by Linux Mint and Debian, which also maintain their positions.

The Top 10 of the distributions is completed in this order for Manjaro, Arch Linux, KDE neon, Fedora, openSUSE, Other (not specified) and elementary OS. Among the news that we found compared to last year, the rise of openSUSE stands out, which climbed two places in 2020. The opposite is the case with elementary OS, which loses popularity and falls one position.

As for desktop environments, KDE stands for the fourth consecutive year as the most voted, this time increasing its notoriety even more. GNOME also repeats and rises in popularity, being the second preferred environment by the community. In third place, we find Cinnamon, who regains third place after being snatched last year by Xfce, which is hot on his heels.

The next desktop environments in this ranking are MATE, Deepin, Other (unspecified), Pantheon, Budgie and LXQt.

Without surprises begins the list of the best web browsers of 2020, headed by Firefox, which once again has a great advantage over its rivals. It is followed by Chrome and in third place this year there is a new player, who climbs two positions and doubles its popularity. It is Brave, a browser created by the co-founder of the Mozilla project and which focuses on the respect of users’ privacy.

Chromium, Microsoft Edge, Opera , Vivaldi , Other (not specified) and Pale Moon make up the rest of the list of the most popular web browsers last year. The inclusion of Edge stands out, which has practically just landed on Linux. For its part, Opera has dropped two positions and Vivaldi one.
