First maintenance version of OpenGnsys Espeto is available

by | Feb 28, 2020

The OpenGnsys Project has released this week a new maintenance version of its free and open application for the management and deployment of operating systems. OpenGnsys 1.1.1a incorporates interesting news, in addition to fixing some issues of the previous release reported by the user community.

Among the new features, the first maintenance review of OpenGnsys Espeto facilitates the update process thanks to a script that allows to choose the version to which the user wants to update. The system now supports MBR starts on PCIe disks (NVMe) and the start with Grub can be secured by entering a password.

In addition, it incorporates a new page that shows basic statistics of the organizational unit and on the “Computer Properties” page data from operating system sessions are reflected. Finally, updated documentation of the OpenGnsys 1.1.0a online basic course has been added.

These developments add to those incorporated in the latest version, which was released at the end of 2019. From OpenGnsys 1.1.1 onwards, a Git code repository with a copy on GitHub is used, there is full compatibility with UEFI systems and with NVMe disks. It allows to use logrotate to avoid uncontrolled growth of log files and customize the priority of service execution for the Torrent protocol.

It also has new agents for operating systems and improvements have been introduced in the ogAdmServer service for equipment management, in the ogLive clients, in the web administration console and in the images repository.

You can check the complete list of changes in version 1.1.1 (Espeto) and the maintenance review at this link.

This application for the management and deployment of classroom computers is constantly evolving thanks to the collaborative development of several Spanish public universities: Autonomous University of Barcelona, University of Huelva, University of Malaga, Polytechnic University of Valencia, University of Seville and University of Zaragoza.

If you are interested in trying OpenGnsys or updating to its latest version you can download the software from this website.

We’d like to remind that the connection broker for desktop and application virtualization UDS Enterprise is compatible with OpenGnsys. Together, they allow to provide authenticated access to remote PCs. IT administrators can enable access during certain hours from any location and device to the desktop of physical computers.

This integration was born as a result of the Remote PC project, led by the University of Seville with the support of the UDS Enterprise team. It was created with the goal of taking full advantage of the computers of the ICT classrooms of the universities, so that they are accessible during the hours in which the centers remain closed. Thanks to this development, organizations of all kinds can benefit from this possibility and maximize the performance of their devices when shops, businesses, public offices… are closed to the public.
