Zorin OS: a Linux alternative to Windows and macOS

by | Sep 11, 2020

Windows and macOS users willing to switch to Linux have a distribution at their fingertips that will make the switch a breeze: Zorin OS. It has been designed so that everyone can personalize their desktop to be as similar as possible to the one they use.

It is based on Ubuntu and on the same Open Source code used by the US Department of Defense and NASA, making it a solid and reliable system. It has advanced security features, is fast, and doesn't slow down with updates. In addition, there is a Lite edition that promises to work quickly on computers up to 15 years old, so it can be a good option to give older computers a second chance.

All versions of Zorin OS are available to download for free, although if you want to contribute to the development you can opt for the “Ultimate” version, which is around € 50. Since its launch in June last year, this distro has already been downloaded more than 1.7 million times.

The developers say that “More than 65% of these downloads come from proprietary platforms such as Windows and macOS, reflecting our mission to bring the power of Linux to new people and grow the community for the benefit of all. We have been working ever since to make Zorin OS 15 even more powerful, accessible and easy to use with updates and punctual releases.”

Just a few days ago they launched a new version and many of the applications have also been updated, such as LibreOffice. Zorin OS 15.3 is based on version 5.4 of the Linux kernel and offers performance and stability improvements. Additionally, support has been added for the new Intel “Tiger Lake” processors, the new AMD APUs and other peripherals.

There are different versions of this distro so that each user can choose the one that best suits their needs:

Zorin OS 15.3 Core: the standard version.

Zorin OS 15.3 Lite: for computers with low hardware resources. Its desktop environment is Xfce.

Zorin OS 15.3 Education: designed for academic use, includes dedicated vApp and tools designed for learning.

Zorin OS 15.3 Ultimate: the most complete and paid version, to support the development of the project.

How to avoid issues with virtual machines

Virtualization comes with a wide range of benefits for organizations. It helps cut IT costs and reduces downtime while increasing efficiency and productivity. It also increases the resiliency of networks, primarily when disasters occur, and promotes more green-friendly operations.

However, using virtual machines also comes with a set of downsides. Information security may get compromised, workloads mixed up, separation duties lost, among other issues. It is vital to know how you can get over these problems, and that’s what this article will discuss.

Let’s get started.
